This is a list of all the running gags that have appeared in Grojband.

Series Long-Running Gags[]

Physical[]

  • Diary Mode is a running gag where Trina will get so angry, that she will blast up into the air and write in her diary, leaving flames behind on the paper while the background glows red and fiery and heavy metal music plays. On some occasions, Trina will go into diary mode, with other emotions such as love or sadness which will change the colors, music, and effects of her diary mode. This gag has happened in every episode except for Dreamreaver Part 1 and A Knight to Remember where it was actually Mina who went into diary mode. Trina has four Diary Modes: Anger, Love, Sadness and Fear.
  • Trina will try to kiss Nick but something will ruin their kiss just before their lips touch. For instance, in Pox N Roll, Trina and Nick were about to kiss before Nick's friend made him look at him for no reason. Nick then turned his head, and Trina kissed Nick on the ear, giving her the chickenpox. This is a gag known as Kiss Fails.
  • Various characters in the show perform impossible feats using just their bodies. An example of this is in Dance of the Dead, when Corey opens up the top of his head to reveal his brain and again when he puts his hands through his nostrils, making them appear out of his ears. This is a gag common in many cartoons called Impossible Body Distortion.
  • Corey flicking his guitar pick to help himself and the band. This gag is more commonly known as "Pick Flicks." This gag first occurred in Math of Kon where Corey used a pick flick to reveal that Trigonometrina is really Trina to the school and was lastly and most prominently used in Dueling Buttons where Corey even did multiple pick flicks dedicated an entire song to it.
  • Mayor Mellow's phone ringing coming from a weird place, usually his hat. This first happened in Pox N Roll where Mayor Mellow's hat rang as a phone and even had an antenna when he used it. Aside from his hat, it'll come from other places too. For instance: In Math of Kon, Mayor Mellow pulled a phone out of the camera man's butthole.
  • Trina abuses Mina everytime she fails her plan.

Verbal[]

  • Corey's Morals happen at the end of every episode where a spotlight will appear out of nowhere and shine on Corey as he tells a moral that he learned from the experience of the episode. Sometimes, when he does this, animals will gather around him and listen to him, like in Smash Up Terby, a bunch squirrels gathered around him and some birds perched on him. In Monster of Rock, a bunch of sewer rats gathered around him. Almost every time he tells a moral, Laney will lash out at him for not using those as lyrics for their song.
  • Characters will constantly mistake Laney for a boy. Even her own bandmates, who know for a fact that she's a girl will treat her like a boy from time to time. This is known as Misgendering Laney. This will usually be people addressing her with names such as "Man", "Dude", "Guy", "Bro", and "Fella".
  • Characters constantly make Fourth Wall Jokes all the time. This was first used twice in Cloudy with a Chance of Malt Balls where Mina asked Trina if she could have the extra ticket and Trina denied her, telling her that "She's not in the episode." Mina then sadly walked away and didn't appear for the rest of the episode until one point where Trina angrily called her, demanding that she comes to help her but Mina replied with "But I'm not in this episode." These fourth wall breaks include, characters talking to the audience, characters noticing a censor bar or censorship panel, a character stopping others from doing a certain crime by claiming that it's a Kids-Related show, book or movie, characters referring to the fact that they're in a TV Show, Episode, Book or Movie, Etc.
  • Corey will tell what are known as Excessively Long Operation Titles. Where he will say the name of the plan that they're going to put in action but its title is really long. When Corey tells the name of the plan, he will usually run out of breath and have to take in a deep breath before saying the word "play." When he does this, he will usually say something along the lines of "Okay guys, operation (excessive title) is now in (takes deep breath) play!"
  • Corey will say the phrase "I've got a crazy plan that just might work." whenever he has an idea to do something. First used in Cloudy with a Chance of Malt Balls and most prominently used in Monster of Rock. In the episode Zoohouse Rock, Kin said this catchphrase and Corey looked at him with an irritated facial expression.
  • Trina insulting Grojband by making a play on words with the name of their band by saying things such as "Garabageband", "Sewageband", "Goorageband", "Grojbland", and "Fromageband". In the episode Rock the House, Instead of Trina, Carrie did this gag as she called them "Grossband". This was also referenced to in Dreamreaver Part 2, where there was a band that was an evil doppelgänger version of Grojband called Mirage Band and a good doppelgänger version of Trina named Katrina who hated them and she yelled at them saying "You don't scare me Mirage Band!" which was possibly a direct but subtle allusion to Trina's typical gag only with the roles of good and bad switched around.
  • Characters using the phrase "What the what?" Most of the time, it's Trina. She first used this in the episode Dance of the Dead out of anger after Mina had interrupted her kiss with Nick.
  • Sometimes, when Corey tells a motivational speech, he will have the rest of the band hum a motivational tune while he talks. First done in Creepaway Camp, when Corey was motivating Blade to get back in the saddle, while the rest of the band hummed along with him.

Indie Cool Transition!!!.jpg

Visual[]

  • In between scenes of the show. There will be what's known as Wicked Cool Transitions, where a transition will happen based off of the previous scene or a quote or event from that scene. There will be a chorus of singers that will sing "Wicked Cool Transition!" to a certain tune, and sometimes sing a different phrase to that tune. These transitions are mainly the Grojband skull spinning in a purple background or the hands of the members of Grojband making rock symbols and putting them together while they spin around the screen.
  • Kin and Kon will tell a story of something called Rock Lore. Where a flashback to the ancient times will be seen as they tell the story of some ancient gods of rock.
  • Donkey will randomly appear in the background of certain episodes of the show, usually an audience. It doesn't ever have any significance in the plot or storyline of the episode and is just there to be random, dumb, and funny.
  • Barney having a new job and a new costume in every episode he appears in.
  • There have been multiple songs where Corey has been in a position where he leans out over the audience as he sings to them. First used in the song Zombie Dance and last used in When We Make Today Our Day. Laney did this in the song You're So Untrue.
  • In the episode Who Are You, Corey got an idea and a light bulb appeared above his head. He then ran off and the light bulb fell to the ground and broke into pieces to which Laney responded, "I'm not cleaning that." Since then, it's been a running gag for the light bulb to drop on the ground and break whenever one appears above Corey's head.
