Here’s a piece of news that 2D animation purists may have a tough time to swallow. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me, The Lorax) will be developing the Canadian cartoon Grojband into a 2D/CG-animated/live action feature film franchise. Universal is ready to turn the hugely popular cartoon franchise by Neptoon Studios into a feature that is slated for a April 15, 2016 release.

Chris Renaud, who directed the Universal/Illumination’s Dr. Seuss' The Lorax and Universal’s summer blockbuster Despicable Me 2 will helm the project, along with Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, Coraline). It is written by one of Grojband creators, Todd Kauffman.
